Music Legend Apologizes for Remarks About 9/11

One of the icons of the American music scene got himself into some hot water Tuesday over comments he made on Howard Stern’s show about the 9/11 terrorist attacks, and now he has apologized, msnbc.com reports.

Singer Tony Bennett said on the Stern show that America was to blame for the attacks, saying in part: “They flew the plane in, but we caused it,” according to the report. He then added: “Because we were bombing them and they told us to stop.”

Bennett, who recently turned 85, later issued an apology, saying: "There is simply no excuse for terrorism and the murder of the nearly 3,000 innocent victims of the 9/11 attacks on our country. My life experiences — ranging from the Battle of the Bulge to marching with Martin Luther King — made me a lifelong humanist and pacifist, and reinforced my belief that violence begets violence and that war is the lowest form of human behavior. I am sorry if my statements suggested anything other than an expression of my love for my country, my hope for humanity and my desire for peace throughout the world."

  1. Proof once again that the only unforgiveable sin in modern America is telling the truth.

Who is “they”? We weren’t bombing AfPak before 9/11, nor were we bombing Saudi Arabia, the homeland of the hijackers and OBL.
Sounds like an ignorant and ill-thought-out remark made off the cuff, more than anything else. While an apology is probably in order for something like that, it’s hardly a firing offense or the trigger for abject self-flaggelation. It gets dumber and dumber in our American “free speech” culture anymore.

  3. Tony got his facts mixed up but in essence, he’s still kinda right. No, we weren’t actively bombing the Middle East then but our policy towards the area had done NOTHING to win over hearts & minds over there for decades. I’ll never say we deserved it because we didn’t – nobody deserves what happened here or in the British tube system but the arrogance of certain people in positions of authority from both US political parties sure helped make it easy for someone to not only come up with the plan but actually find enough people who hated the US so much that they didn’t mind going out on a kamikaze mission. But it’s okay – despite our “free speech” culture we can be certain that anyone who says anything other than 9/11 was something that just came out of nowhere will be shouted down immediately (as I’m sure I probably will be).
