The show that is often cited as the original reality TV program and the one that effectively launched the current reality craze is back on the air for its 26th season — and its numbers are soaring.

The newest installment of MTV’s "Real World" franchise opened Wednesday to 1.9 million total viewers, according to The Hollywood Reporter’s The Live Feed blog.

In MTV’s core demo of viewers 12 to 34 years old, “The Real World: San Diego” posted a 2.1 rating, up 17% from the premiere of the previous edition, "The Real World: Las Vegas," the story adds. “San Diego” was the top show on cable in the demo.

MTV announced back in March that it has renewed the show for its 27th and 28th editions; the program debuted in 1992.
