Alec Baldwin-Related Story of the Day: ‘SNL’-Inspired Ice Cream Flavor (Predictably) Sparks an Uproar

It will probably come as a surprise to no one that a new Ben & Jerry’s ice cream flavor with a name inspired by a sketch from NBC’s "Saturday Night Live" has, perhaps as intended, sparked an uproar.

The Schweddy Balls ice cream flavor has upset the advocacy group OneMillionMoms, an affiliate of the American Family Association, reports RightWingWatch.org.

In a press release, the group writes: "The vulgar new flavor has turned something as innocent as ice cream into something repulsive. Not exactly what you want a child asking for at the supermarket. The name originated from a ‘Saturday Night Live’ skit featuring Alec Baldwin as Pete Schweddy, owner of a holiday bakery called Season’s Eatings. ‘There are lots of great treats this time of year,’ Schweddy says. ‘Zucchini bread, fruitcake, but the thing I most like to bring out at this time of the year are my balls.’"

Sean Greenwood, a spokesperson for Ben & Jerry’s, defended the name, saying, "The name is irreverent. But we’ve always been about having some irreverence and having some fun. … We’re not trying to offend people. Our fans get the humor."

OneMillionMoms is asking for emails to be sent to the ice cream company to stop further distribution of Schweddy Balls products.

  1. Tell the 1,000,000Moms I am offended by their right wing attack on a whole list of things, including my freedom to choose, using stem cells to save lives and their gay bashing, how about the fact that these bitches are directly responsible for millons of AIDS deaths because of the removal of contraception to the continent of Africa during the Bush W. years. All which disgust me far more than Ben and Jerry’s Schweddy Balls.

  2. It’s not exactly One Million Moms. More like 600. Not 600 million, either. Six hundred. Period.
    They overstated their numbers. Somewhat.
    Quelle surprise.
    Color me shocked.

  3. I think the most important fact people are overlooking is that the Schweddy Balls skit wasn’t even remotely funny. It was tedious, unoriginal dreck.

Hey dawg, I did a teeny tiny almost unnoticeable copy edit on your comment. Hope you don’t mind. My edits are in ALL CAPS:
I think the most important fact people are overlooking is that EVEN THOUGH THE STUDIO AUDIENCE LAUGHED UPROARIOUSLY, the Schweddy Balls skit wasn’t even remotely funny TO ME. ALTHOUGH THE VIDEO HAS GONE VIRAL ON THE INTERWEBZ, AND IS INTERESTING ENOUGH TO SOME PEOPLE THAT THEY COMMENT ON STORIES ABOUT IT, I JUDGE THAT it was yedious, unoriginal dreck.
    See? Fixed it for ya.
    De nada.
