A Golden Globe nominee has been cast in the lead role in an upcoming feature film based on a seminal California rock band, EmpireOnline reports.

Aaron Eckhart will play Dennis Wilson, one of the founding members of the Beach Boys, in “The Drummer,” the story reports. Randall Miller, the director of "Bottle Shock," will helm the film.

Miller told Variety that the search had been on for some time for the lead role of Dennis Wilson, brother of Beach Boys frontman Brian Wilson. Dennis was known as the carefree member of the Beach Boys, and played drums for the band until his death at 39 in 1983.

"We’d been trying to figure out who the right person would be to fill this role,” Miller said. “It’s quite a demanding role so it had to be a great actor who could sing."

Eckhart received a Golden Globe nomination in 2007 for “Thank You for Smoking.” He is also known for his performances in “Rabbit Hole,” “The Dark Knight” and “In the Company of Men.”

Shooting on “The Drummer” will begin in 2012.
