The actor who plays "Mad Men" leading man Don Draper says he wasn’t a shoe-in for the part, according to The Hollywood Reporter, citing a podcast interview with Jon Hamm.

"The casting directors didn’t know who I was. I wasn’t on anybody’s list," Hamm said. "They wanted fill-in-the-blank of TV stars, movie stars."

Among those considered for the role in the AMC drama was Thomas Jane, "and they were told that Thomas Jane doesn’t do television," Hamm said, according to the story. "Now starring in ‘Hung,’ by the way."

Jane’s show airs on HBO, but he previously had mainly starred in films, the piece adds.
