Ousted Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi has been confirmed dead, a wide range of news outlets report. Libyan Prime Minister Mahmoud Jibril confirmed Gadhafi’s death today in Tripoli, The Washington Post reports.

Gadhafi died in his home town of Sirte, Libya, which has been under attack as part of the nationwide uprising that deposed Gadhafi, the Post reports.

Libya’s ambassador to the U.K. said Gadhafi’s body was in Misrata, Libya, according to CNN. Initial reports of the circumstances of Gadhafi’s death were unclear, the story reports.

Cable news networks including CNN, MSNBC and Fox News were devoting extensive coverage today to the breaking story, with some televising graphic video purported to show Gadhafi’s bloody body.

According to some accounts, Gadhafi was in a convoy that attempted to flee Sirte and was attacked by a NATO airstrike.

CNN reported that one of Gadhafi’s sons, Mutassim, and Gadhafi’s chief of intelligence, Abdullah al-Senussi, were also said to have been killed in the attack. Other reports were less clear about whether Gadhafi’s son had been killed or captured.

The CNN report adds: “In another major development, revolutionary fighters said they wrested control of Sirte on Thursday. And NATO said it is going to convene soon for a meeting to discuss ending its operation in Libya, a source told CNN.”
