Ashton Kutcher Shifts His Twitter Strategy After Stumbling Into Joe Paterno Controversy

Ashton Kutcher has announced some changes in his Twitter practices after a couple of blunders.

He initially said he would stop using Twitter — at least until he found a way to avoid blowing it — after he stumbled into the Joe Paterno/Penn State controversy by tweeting before he had done his research, reports People.com.

When the star of CBS’s "Two and a Half Men” heard about Paterno’s late-night firing on Wednesday, Kutcher tweeted "How do you fire Jo Pa?" Later, after learning that Paterno’s dismissal came in the wake of a child sex abuse scandal that has serious implications for school officials, Kutcher admitted that he didn’t initially realize why Paterno had been fired.

Kutcher, who has 8 million Twitter followers, received a flood of criticism over the tweet.

He tried to step back from it by tweeting a new message: "Heard Joe was fired, fully recant previous tweet! Didn’t have full story."

However, he later thought better of that message, too, and deleted it. He then tweeted: "As an advocate in the fight against child sexual exploitation, I could not be more remorseful for all involved in the Penn St. case."

The story notes that Kutcher also had another recent Twitter problem, when he tweeted on Sept. 11 that it was “the greatest day of the year” because football season was starting.

Temporarily, Kutcher decided to withdraw from the social media service while he thought things over.

He pledged: "As of immediately I will stop tweeting until I find a way to properly manage this feed. I feel awful about this error. Won’t happen again."

Kutcher later announced that he would have future posts monitored, E! Online reports. He said he will continue tweeting, but will run everything by his managers at Katalyst Media first.

Kutcher wrote: "A collection of over 8 million followers is not to be taken for granted. I feel responsible for delivering an informed opinion and not spreading gossip or rumors through my twitter feed.”
