HBO has signed a two-year exclusive overall deal with an Oscar-winning writer and producer, reports Deadline.com. As part of the deal, Akiva Goldsman will work on a Western drama about famed Old West gunslinger Doc Holliday, the story says.

Ron Howard is attached to direct the project’s pilot, while his father, Rance Howard, will co-produce along with his wife, Judy Howard, the piece adds.

"Doc," a novel published by Mary Doria Russell in May, serves as the inspiration for the project, the story says.

Goldsman won an Oscar for best adapted screenplay for "A Beautiful Mind" in 2002.
