Talk about big shoes to fill. The daughter of perennial Academy Award nominee, two-time Oscar winner and two-time Emmy winner Meryl Streep has recently turned her attention to getting her own acting career off the ground, and she just got what could be a big break.
Grace Gummer, 25, has been signed to NBC’s new musical drama "Smash," Digital Spy reports, citing a story in Variety. Gummer’s role is potentially recurring — she will be the daughter of Anjelica Huston’s character.
"Smash" stars Debra Messing and Katharine McPhee as part of a group that’s putting together a Broadway musical about the life of Marilyn Monroe. Also in "Smash" are stars Bernadette Peters, Nick Jonas and Will Chase.
"Smash" debuts on NBC on Feb. 6, 2012.
Gummer has performed on the stage, and had a small role in last summer’s Tom Hanks movie "Larry Crowne." She also appeared in the Nickelodeon series "Gigantic."
Gummer’s mom has a whopping 16 Oscar nominations under her belt, going back to 1978’s “The Deer Hunter,” and took home trophies for “Kramer vs. Kramer” (1979) and “Sophie’s Choice” (1982). Meryl Streep’s name has also come up a few times at the Emmys, with the actress taking home the award in 1978, for “Holocaust,” and 2004, for “Angels in America.”
