MTV Maps Out Return of Signature Show Amid Concerns About Ratings Erosion

MTV is charting plans for the return of a show that has become a huge ratings generator for the network, but the network’s excitement may be tempered by concern about a drop in ratings.

The fifth season of "Jersey Shore" will launch on MTV on Jan. 5, with the cast back in its stomping ground of Seaside Heights, N.J., reports the Los Angeles Times’ Show Tracker blog. The cast traveled to Florence, Italy, for the show’s fourth season.

Questions remain about whether the show can duplicate its previous ratings success, after the fourth-season finale drew 6.6 million viewers, the story notes. That figure represented a decline of 13% from the third-season finale — even after the season four premiere was the show’s best ever with 8.8 million viewers, the story points out.

  1. I’ve loved the drama of the Jersey Shore since the beginning, but I don’t know if a season 5 will keep me entertained. It’s getting very repetitive and boring, so hopefully they’ve got something new up their sleeve, cause if not they will probably lose a viewer out of me.
