Cablevision revealed that it was targeted Tuesday by a coordinated Internet attack, Multichannel News reports. The company said it succeeded in recovering from the attack.
The attack caused some customers to be unable to access certain Internet sites for about six hours Tuesday evening, the story reports. The multiple system operator has about 2.95 million broadband customers, mainly in the New York area.
The story reports: “The New York-area MSO said it was alerting customers about a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack on the Optimum Online network during the evening hours Tuesday night. Cablevision said the event began at approximately 6 p.m. Eastern Tuesday and was resolved shortly after midnight, when all service returned to normal operation.”
In a DDoS attack, huge amounts of data are sent to certain websites or email addresses, rendering the targeted services unusable. Cablevision said the attack "caused a disruptive increase in automated requests on a portion of the network."
The company said it is investigating the source of the attack.
