A current hit CD has topped sales of 5 million units in the United States — the first time any album has achieved that milestone since 2004, the New York Daily News reports.

The CD is “21,” by British soul singer Adele. More than 15 million copies of the disc have sold worldwide, the story notes.

Adele is wrapping up a year of honors as well as big sales. She recently snagged six Grammy nominations, including nods for song of the year, record of the year and album of the year.

“21” is the first 5 million seller domestically since Usher’s “Confessions,” which moved 7.9 million units in 2004.

Adele’s “21,” named after Adele’s age at the time she recorded it, has produced the hit singles “Rolling in the Deep” and “Someone Like You.” The singer, now 23, is recovering from surgery in which she had a benign polyp removed from her vocal cords.
