A drama series based on the novel "Beat the Reaper" will be executive produced by Leonardo DiCaprio for HBO, Deadline.com reports. Four networks were reportedly interested in the project before it was secured by HBO.

The book was originally in consideration as a feature film, with DiCaprio to star, before being reimagined as a TV series.

The medical thriller comes from New Regency and marks the company’s first TV project since shuttering Regency Television in 2008, the piece adds. The story tracks a young ER physician who used to work for well-known crime family.

“Beat the Reaper” has feature writers Brian Koppelman and David Levien attached to write, executive produce and direct, the story reports. The project will be co-produced by New Regency, DiCaprio’s Appian Way and Rick Yorn’s LBI Entertainment.

The “Beat the Reaper” deal follows the sale a few weeks ago of “The Lobotomist” to HBO, with DiCaprio’s production company attached, as previously reported.
