Pressure on HBO Intensifies in Latest Bill Maher Controversy

A Christmas Eve tweet from comedian Bill Maher that poked fun of Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow’s religious beliefs has prompted calls for a boycott of HBO, the home to Maher’s show "Real Time," reports the Los Angeles Times’ Show Tracker blog.

As previously reported, Maher tweeted about the Broncos’ loss to the Buffalo Bills, noting, "Wow, Jesus just f—-d #TimTebow bad! And on Xmas Eve! Somewhere in hell Satan is tebowing, saying to Hitler ‘Hey, Buffalo’s killing them.’”

Maher’s tweet caused some Twitter users to respond with the idea of boycotting HBO, according to the story. Maher has previously had calls for his ouster from HBO, such as in July, when he talked about "hate sex" with two Republican presidential candidates, and in 2008 when he made comments about the pope, the story notes.

  1. This is the same guy who had to apologize for praising the suicide terrorists immediately after 9/11. He’s not to blame. The people who enjoy his act are the ones to be held in contempt. What’s their excuse?

  2. “the ones who enjoy his act are the ones to be held in contempt”? Yeah, Doug, great idea. Persecute someone because they not only find something funny but also accurate. Maher never “praised” the 9/11 terrorists, he just argued that they shouldn’t be called ‘cowards’ and he was right. You can call them evil, you can call them just about anything you want but they weren’t cowards. As for the Tebow thing, if Jesus & God are what’s helping him win then it must also be their fault when he has a game completely implode on him. I’m sick of all of these sports figures who have to go out of their way to play the God card after a game or whatever. I’m with George Carlin on this one – IF there’s some kind of Supreme Being out there, he / she / it / they could probably give a $#!t less about whether or not this guy completes 30 passes in a game. Between this and the pile of crap Denis Leary has put himself into lately, it seems to me that the God Squad has a little too much time on its hands lately.
