Top Twitter Trends of 2011 Revealed — Including the Top 10 TV Shows, Movies, Musical Artists, Sports and News Events

A new study reveals the hottest topics of 2011, as measured by the Twittersphere, Advertising Age reports. The study breaks down results into categories such as top TV shows and top musical artists, while also providing an overall top 10 list.

The study by What the Trend reveals the hottest Twitter topic of the year was Justin Bieber, followed by soccer/football. The top 10 is crowded with musical acts, including Lady Gaga at No. 3, Jonas Brothers at No. 5, a South Korean boy band you may or may not have heard of called Super Junior at No. 7, Britney Spears at No. 8 and another boy band that hasn’t blown up yet in the U.S., the British-Irish group One Direction, at No. 10.

Also on the overall top 10: the NBA at No. 4, Christmas at No. 6 and the Japan earthquake at No. 9.

The top-trending U.S. TV show is “Glee,” followed by “Saturday Night Live,” “The Vampire Diaries” and “Jersey Shore.” No TV shows made the overall Top 10.

Harry Potter owns the top two spots among movies, with the latest release, “Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows,” at No. 1 and the earlier Harry Potter movies grouped together at No. 2.
