A well-known musician has joined CBS News as cultural correspondent, reports The New York Times. The musician is jazz trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, who’s also the artistic director of Jazz at Lincoln Center.

The New Orleans musician — who has appeared on several episodes of "60 Minutes" and recorded the trumpet solo for the "CBS Sunday Morning" program — will begin his new role in January 2012.

CBS News President David Rhodes made the announcement Thursday, saying Marsalis will provide "insight into a broad range of cultural and educational developments."

In a statement, Marsalis said of his new gig, “I look forward to sharing with viewers the incredible variety and richness of our national culture — from ballet to the blues, from barbecue to the backbeat.”
