Troubled Drama at Risk of Cancellation After Weak Turnout for Season Finale

Poor ratings for the finale of a broadcast drama series may lead to the show’s cancellation, reports the Los Angeles Times’ ShowTracker blog.

Only 3.9 million viewers watched Sunday’s first-season finale of ABC’s “Pan Am,” with the broadcast trailing CBS’s "CSI: MIami" and NBC’s "Celebrity Apprentice" in its time period in both total viewers and viewers 18 to 49, the story notes. The show pulled a paltry 1.2 average rating in 18-49.

The finale numbers represent a large dropoff from the show’s debut, which attracted almost 11 million viewers, the piece points out. ABC declined to comment, according to the article.

  1. Given that there has been so much buzz about PanAm already having been cancelled, a low turnout for Sunday’s finale isn’t too surprising. I watched, thinking it would be the last chance to see this stylish and engaging show, and because I was curious to see how it wrapped up. Interestingly, the finale left open several plots, with ample opportunity to delve deeper into the various characters’ storylines. Perhaps if ABC would air the episodes in order (the previous week’s show was a bit jarring) and focus on the production instead of the confusing PR, it might regain the audience it originally captured.

  2. I loved this show. It had highly entertaining plots and was wonderful to look at. It was off the air a very long time around the holidays. By the time I realized it was back on the air I’d missed an important episode. The one I saw seemed to have happened plotwise much earlier than the one that aired before the holidays. Anyway, this was the only non-sitcom I looked forward to watching week-to-week. Alas.
