Advertisers Fleeing Rush Limbaugh’s Radio Show After He Calls Law Student a ‘Slut’

Advertisers have been bailing out on Rush Limbaugh’s long-running radio talk show in response to his harsh criticism of a law student who testified before lawmakers about contraception.

AOL today became the eighth advertiser to drop the show, USA Today reports. Others include Sleep Train, Citrix Systems, Carbonite and LegalZoom, according to the report.

In a statement, AOL said: "One of our core values is that we act with integrity. We have monitored the unfolding events and have determined that Mr. Limbaugh’s comments are not in line with our values."

The story reports: “Limbaugh called 30-year-old law student Sandra Fluke a ‘slut’ and ‘prostitute’ last week after she testified to congressional Democrats in support of national health care policies that would compel employers and other organizations, including her university, to offer group health insurance that covers birth control for women.”

Over the weekend, after advertisers began fleeing the show, Limbaugh apologized to Fluke.

Clear Channel, whose Premiere Radio Networks hosts Limbaugh’s show, has stood behind the host. Limbaugh has a contract with Premiere through 2016, the story notes.

Premiere issued a statement over the weekend saying: "The contraception debate is one that sparks strong emotion and opinions on both sides of the issue. We respect the right of Mr. Limbaugh, as well as the rights of those who disagree with him, to express those opinions."

  1. I suspect others will fight to take the place of those who flee …

  2. I love it when a Junkie insults others, and as usual, Rush got the facts wrong. Rush must have been under the influence when he made the comments. Once a junkie, always a junkie. That is a fact!

  3. How did you react to David Letterman joking about 14-year-old Willow Palin being an easy sexual target? It seems an apology was enough in that case, an even more egregious example of bad judgment.

  4. And those advertisers will be a target of the backlash as well. Yes no question there are some lining up but most of those are looking for remnant rates when the ad time is not completely sold out on his show. That’s the lowest possible rate for ad time. Shows like Rush would rather get something than nothing so they give it away at a real cheap rate. What may have cost $5000 for a 30 second spot is now $1000 just to get some revenue in for his show. Bottom line this will hurt Rush significantly in the pocket of not only his show but let’s not forget the local stations that carry his radio show. Would sure like to see the number of local advertisers that have pulled out on him.
Terrible mistake that may put him on the back burner like Don Imus who is nothing more than a blip on the radio and TV radar.

  5. Limbag is nothing but a fat, overstuffed blowhard. Anyone who listens to his drivel and hate is no better. A druggie, liar and misogynistic fool. Sooner he dies, the better for the country and humanity in general.

  6. Let these advertisers flee; I now know who to never do business with again.
How would you define someone who has so much sex she complains she can’t afford her own contraceptives so everyone else should pay for them? Think about it – condoms are in most cases less than $1 each!
No one is trying to deny anyone contraceptives, there’s just no reason all the rest of society should have to pay for your sex life.
Can’t afford contraceptives? Well, you could always, you know, not have sex… but somehow that’s seen as “crazy.”

  7. If anything should be clear from this blowhard is that as a spokesman for the Republican base, which he is, the Republican Party has turned into hateful, power grabbing, extremists that will slander anyone who dare speak against them. The ONLY thing that matters is money and power. Not the welfare of the country as a whole or even human beings as individuals.
Bill, by the sound of your comments, I’m guessing you were part of the “sausage fest” before congress speaking about female contraception.
I hate to break the news to you but ANYONE who buys ANY insurance of ANY type is helping pay for other peoples problems. The insurance companies would much rather pay for your contraception and hers than pay for all of the Ob/Gyn visits, doctor visits and future childhood maladies. If a woman cannot afford prevention, what makes you think you won’t be paying to raise that child? You are obviously one of those that reside in the “bubble” and are never swayed by the facts.
I also hate to tell you that people, but apparently not you, have been having recreational sex since the beginning of time. You should try it some time. Just be sure you have protection.

  8. Bill…
Not every female taking oral contraceptives is doing it for birth control. For many women with real health issues related to their monthly cycles, the “birth control” medicine is required to get their system back on track. I know of two women who were put on birth control by their doctors solely for that purpose. But being a man, you probably can’t comprehend that.
And by the way…isn’t Viagra covered by most insurance providers? How about we ban that as well?
