Another Broadcast Net Readying a Singing Competition, With ‘Idol’ Winner on Board — and a Twist

The increasingly crowded field of prime-time singing competition shows is about to get even more crowded, as ABC readies its own entry, EW.com reports.

“Duets,” the Alphabet Network’s competitor to “American Idol,” “X Factor” and “The Voice,” boasts some serious star power, notably Kelly Clarkson — who helped one of those rival shows, “Idol,” get off to a great start when she won the first season of the show, way back in 2002.

Joining Clarkson on the show will be another music heavyweight, Lionel Richie, the story reports. Also on hand are Jennifer Nettles and Robin Thicke, with the whole crew scouring the country in search of talent.

One twist is that the show’s regulars will take the stage alongside their undiscovered partners, performing duets live in front of the studio audience.

This makes the show “completely different” from the others, said Clarkson, adding: “They don’t audition like a normal process. We get to collaborate with the artists that we choose. We get to go find the talent we really believe in.”

ABC has the show slated for this summer.

  1. Hmm, very interesting news as Kelly Clarkson, Robin Thicke and Lionel Richie all just appeared on The Voice as mentors in the battle rounds. I don’t think I’m interesting in yet another singing competition, it’s just getting old.
