The reported ringleader of a Texas prison break who was a focus of an upcoming four-part TV documentary series has been executed in Texas, Realscreen reports.
George Rivas is a subject of the Investigation Discovery series “On Death Row,” from director Werner Herzog. Rivas was 41.
The story reports: “Rivas was best known as the reported ringleader of the infamous ‘Texas 7’ gang, which organized the state’s biggest prison break. While on the run, the group committed a robbery that led to the death of a police officer and as a result, all of the escapees were given the death penalty.”
Rivas was interviewed by Herzog for the ID series last September. The miniseries is set to premiere March 9 on ID, with the Rivas episode scheduled for March 23.
The execution of Rivas parallels developments surrounding another Herzog project. The story reports: “The news comes after Michael Perry, one of the subjects of Herzog’s feature doc ‘Into The Abyss: A Tale of Death, A Tale of Life,’ was executed eight days after speaking to the director, and before the film’s completion.”
