Carnival Films, the studio that produces the period drama "Downton Abbey," denied a report that star Dame Maggie Smith will be leaving the production, reports The New York Times’ ArtsBeat.

A representative for the studio said the report was “complete nonsense,” adding, “We never comment on future story lines but it’s not true that she’s leaving," according to the article.

As previously reported, Smith had reportedly said she wanted her third season playing the acerbic Dowager Countess to be her last. A report originating in the U.K.’s Daily Mail went so far as to describe how the character might be written out of the series.

“Masterpiece,” which airs the drama on PBS in the U.S., said it doesn’t discuss future stories on "Downton Abbey," while Smith’s representatives declined to comment, according to The Times.
