Jimmy Fallon will take his NBC late-night show to North Carolina next week for an appearance by President Obama, The New York Times reports.

For Fallon, it’s a sign of the rising stature of his “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.” For Obama it’s a chance to promote his current effort to get Congress to extend a law keeping student loan rates low, CNN reports.

It will be Obama’s first appearance on the show, following an appearance in February by first lady Michelle Obama.

CNN reports: “Fallon, whose audience skews toward the younger demographic Obama is hoping to reach, will speak with the president while he is at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill Tuesday. Obama’s stop there is one of three colleges he is visiting Tuesday and Wednesday as Congress gets set to consider whether a 2007 provision that cut student loan interest rates in half should be allowed to expire.”

Noting that North Carolina is shaping up as a swing state in the presidential election, Bill Carter writes in The Times: “Jimmy Fallon is making a further statement about his up-and-coming status in late-night television by landing the first big late-night political appearance of the full-on presidential race.”

Fallon tweeted news of the Obama appearance, writing, “The President of the United States!?!?! @BarackObama see you Tuesday!!! #obamaonfallon.”

NBC announced that Dave Matthews will be the musical guest on the show that night.

Carter’s Times piece adds: “Mr. Fallon has emerged in the past year as one of the hot acts in late night with younger viewers, winning respect for many of the show’s original comedy ideas and for his own performance, especially with guests like Bruce Springsteen.”

Michelle Obama appeared to have fun with her “Fallon” appearance earlier this year, participating in a fitness challenge with the host. Here’s a clip:
