Three TV Stations May Go Dark in Retrans Dispute

Three television stations may go dark as an impasse is looming in retransmission consent talks between Media General and Cox Communications, reports B&C.

The affected stations would be WSLS-TV (NBC) in Roanoke, Va.; WJAR-TV (NBC) in Providence, R.I.; and WKRG-TV (CBS) in Mobile, Ala., the story says.

The deals are set to expire at 11:59 p.m. on May 31, according to a Media General representative. Cox customers in the NBC areas might miss programming such as the Summer Olympics if a deal isn’t reached quickly, the story notes.

  1. More fake retransmission drama. No one will miss the Olympics.

  2. I work for a cable company, and believe me this is not fake. Broadcast networks are demanding much higher franchise fees of local stations, which in turn try to pass them on to cable companies. This forces cable companies to pass them on to you, the consumers. Networks are charging more due to higher advertising and sports fees. Haven’t you heard about the multi-billion dollar deal with the NFL, the NBA, Major League Baseball, etc? Oh, not to mention the Olympics coverage. Cable companies eat as much of these charges as they can until they go into the red. Then they are forced to increase their rates because of this. Most cable companies are lucky to get a 5% margin, if at all.
