A familiar television actor is the new Herman Munster. The NBC reboot of the classic television sitcom "The Munsters" will feature former "Crossing Jordan" cast member Jerry O’Connell as the patriarch of the Munster family, EW.com’s Inside TV reports.

The original Herman Munster was played by Fred Gwynne.

In "Mockingbird Lane," the reboot, Herman Munster is a "mishmash of parts from other people and in a constant state of decay," according to the story.

The pilot has a subplot about Herman needing a new heart and trying to find a living "donor" to give him the organ, the story says. Comedian Eddie Izzard was previously cast as the vampire Grandpa.

Unlike the 1960s CBS sitcom that is its inspiration, NBC’s new show is a drama. Writer-producer Bryan Fuller told EW: “We want this show to be an American Harry Potter — to have that sense of a magical world that you get to go to with your family and find stories told in a fantastical way that are instantly relatable. It’s an ‘American Horror Story’ that the whole family can watch.”

O’Connell has had a series of film roles, starting with “Stand by Me” in 1986 and including “Jerry Maguire” (1996), “Kangaroo Jack” (2003) and “Piranha” (2010). Much of his work has been in television, including a long run as Det. Woody Hoyt in “Crossing Jordan” and stints on “My Secret Identity” and “Sliders.”
