Nat Geo Defends Its ‘Seal Team Six’ Scheduling as Non-Political

The decision to air the feature-length movie "Seal Team Six: The Raid on Osama Bin Laden" two days before the presidential election isn’t political, National Geographic Channel said, according to EW.com’s Inside TV.

The film dramatizes the events around bin Laden’s killing and was originally produced for a theatrical release, the story notes. After its TV debut, the project will be available on Netflix on Nov. 5.

The report notes that the scheduling decision followed discussion between Howard T. Owens, president of Nat Geo, and Harvey Weinstein, co-chairman of The Weinstein Company, which distributes the film. Weinstein is a supporter of President Obama, who greenlighted the raid on bin Laden.

The story also notes that National Geographic Channel is a joint venture of National Geographic and News Corp.’s Fox Cable Networks.

"The National Geographic Channel has no political agenda, and believes that audiences can and will judge projects of this type on their own merits," the network said in a statement. "National Geographic Channel also has a reputation of getting inside access, and bringing big events to our viewers first — for instance, we were the first and only network to have an exclusive with George W. Bush for the 10th Anniversary of 9/11 (our highest rated show last year)."
