News broke this afternoon that CIA director David Petraeus has resigned from his position, USA Today reports. Petraeus cited an extramarital affair in his letter of resignation.

“NBC’s Andrea Mitchell said the resignation was submitted in a letter dated Friday and was accepted by the White House,” the story reports.

The piece adds: “In a letter, Petraeus noted that he had been married for 37 years and had exercised ‘extremely poor judgment’ in conducting an extramarital affair.”

Petraeus became CIA director in September 2011 after serving as head of allied forces in Afghanistan, the piece notes.

  1. Strange that Clinton never considered such an honorable move. Resigning when caught in an extramarital affair! The idea!

  2. Big deal. The guy had an extramarital affair. That is between him, his wife, and his lover. No one else. No reason to quit his job, or get fired over it. People need to mind their own business and quit worrying what everyone else is doing in the bedroom.
