Exciting Non-TV News: Report Says Screenwriter of Two of the Original Classic ‘Star Wars’ Movies, ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ and ‘Return of the Jedi,’ May Pen One of the Upcoming ‘Star Wars’ Movies (He Also Wrote ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’)

Exciting news for fans of the most popular movie franchise in history, "Star Wars."

According to our friend Mike Fleming Jr. at Deadline.com, Lawrence Kasdan, who wrote the screenplays of two of the first three "Star Wars" movies —  as well as "Raiders of the Lost Ark" — has been "approached" to work on one of the new "Star Wars" movies that Disney will make.

According to the story, "Here’s some tantalizing dish to chew on before the Thanksgiving turkey and trimmings. After hiring Michael Arndt to script the first installment of the relaunch of George Lucas’ ‘Star Wars’ franchise, I’ve heard Disney has approached Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg and I believe it is to get the ball rolling on the subsequent installments mapped out by Lucas.

"Kasdan scripted two of the original ‘Star Wars’ films in the 1980 ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ and the 1983 follow-up ‘Return of the Jedi.’ He also scripted ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ for Lucas and Steven Spielberg. Kinberg’s franchise work: ‘X-Men: First Class,’ ‘Sherlock Holmes’ and the upcoming ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past,’ which Bryan Singer will direct."

Fleming adds, "Disney’s $4 billion buy of George Lucas’ signature franchise certainly has stirred up passions from fans. I’m still feeling so let down by the last three films that I am not sure they can bring back the magic of the original trilogy, which was so groundbreaking for its time. But that time seems like a galaxy so far far away."

  1. I am a child of the original Star Wars Franchise, and was fortunate enough to see all the originals in the theatre the first time they showed. I, along with so many others, was also let down by the prequels, and hope that Disney can bring back the magic of the originals. Disney please take a lesson from the spanking you received from JOHN CARTER, and pay attention to what fans want.
There are only a few simple things that Disney has to remember when making these new movies.
    1. Most important of all: STORY, STORY, STORY. Forget all the whiz bang visual bubble gum. If there isn’t a great story that we can loose ourselves in, all the other stuff doesn’t amount to a hill of beans.
    2. We also want great characters (NO JAR JAR, Ewoks, or any other characters that remind the viewer that they are watching a movie for children). Please no forced slap stick situations. It is OK to have funny moments, but please make those moments real, and not forced.
    3. Get a visionary director that is first and foremost a story teller and secondary a technical wizard, James Cameron, Ridley Scott, Steven Spielberg, and my favorite Quentin Tarantino, these all would all be great.
    4. You MUST higher John Williams to score the films no matter what his asking price. John creates the music and a lot of the emotion of the films.
Star Wars has a huge fan base, and it’s time to bring back the magic of the originals. The tone of EMPIRE would be a great place to start. Now that Disney owns Star Wars, I see a future for the franchise like James Bond and Star Trek, where the main characters stay the same, but are played by new actors.
It would be totally cool if Disney followed the Star Wars graphic novels for the future of the franchise. Those novels of the continuing story of our hero’s and their children were great, and there are enough stories to continue films for a long long time.
A Message from a Star Wars Fan, and all fans out there:
DISNEY PLEASE DON’T SCREW SCREW THIS UP. YOU ARE TAKING OVER THE HOLLY GRAIL OF FILM FRANCHISES. WE ARE VERY GLAD TO HAVE MORE FILMS COMING, BUT WE ARE VERY FEARFUL OF WHAT COULD HAPPEN IN THE WRONG HANDS.
