The woman who originated the successful advice column "Dear Abby" died Wednesday at 94, reports TMZ.com. According to her representative, Pauline Phillips had been suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.

Phillips’ daughter Jeanne said of her mother, "I have lost my mother, my mentor and my best friend."

Jeanne Phillips, who writes the advice column now, added: "My mother leaves very big high heels to fill with a legacy of compassion, commitment and positive social change. I will honor her memory every day by continuing this legacy."

Pauline Phillips started the column in 1956, writing it under the pen name Abigail Van Buren. A similar column called "Ask Ann Landers" was created by Phillips’ twin sister, Eppie Lederer.

Pauline Phillips said she came up with her pen name by combining the name of the biblical figure Abigail with the name of U.S. President Martin Van Buren.
