Katherine Webb, the girlfriend of Alabama quarterback A.J. McCarron, told the "Today" show’s Matt Lauer that the apology from ESPN over comments made about her looks by commentator Brent Musburger wasn’t needed, reports the New York Post.

Webb, the reigning Miss Alabama USA, indicated she was flattered by the attention.

As previously reported, ESPN apologized for Musburger’s comments, made when the camera focused on Webb, 23, in the crowd during the BCS title game. Musburger said, "You quarterbacks, you get all the good-looking women," and urged kids in Alabama to start playing football.

On the "Today" show, Lauer asked her how she felt about his comments.

“I think the media has been really unfair to him,’’ she said. “If he would have said something along the lines that we were hot or sexy or made any derogatory statements like that, that would have been a little bit different."

She added, "The fact he said we were beautiful and gorgeous, I don’t see why any woman wouldn’t be flattered by that."

As for the apology, Webb said, "You know, I don’t think it was needed, honestly. Of course I appreciate it."

Here’s the clip of Webb’s appearance on "Today":

  1. Thanks Brent! You just launched her career into the stratosphere. And wetted the sickening appetite of the loathsome “Today” show…

  2. Sounds like a level headed, intelligent young lady.

  3. ESPN will be apologizing for the apology later on this afternoon.

  4. “We at ESPN wish to apologize for the previous apology where we apologized for an incident that did not require an apology in the first place. Those people responsible have been sacked. They have also been tarred, feathered, spayed, neutered, folded, spindled, mutilated and sent to cover The World Cup of Yak Synchronized Swimming”.
Seriously, I’m glad she called everyone out that was so aghast on her behalf. Everybody seems to be waiting for the next opportunity to show the world that they’re the champions of world virtue. Every now & then it really IS okay to mind your own business.
