An A&E series set a ratings record with its premiere Monday. EW.com’s Inside TV reports that the cable channel had 4.6 million viewers tune in for the "Psycho" prequel "Bates Motel." The premiere also drew 2.4 million viewers 18 to 49, making it the network’s top-rated drama series premiere ever in the demographic, the piece reports.

The show received generally positive reviews, the story notes.

"We are extremely pleased with the initial viewer response to this edgy and provocative series and are confident that it will continue to draw in new audiences, " said Bob DeBitetto, president and GM of A&E.
