CNBC Departs From Its ‘Mishmosh’ Formula With New Prime-Time Lineup

CNBC is rolling out its new CNBC Prime entertainment block this week, including a Tuesday evening block built on reality shows, TVNewser reports.

CNBC Chairman Mark Hoffman said last week that the new lineup, including the reality shows "Car Chasers" and “Treasure Detectives,” will help the cable channel move beyond a prime-time lineup that was a "mishmosh, a land of misfit toys,” the report notes.

The channel intends to launch eight or nine new shows by the end of this year, the piece reports.

The goal with CNBC Prime is to create a true brand, while keeping faithful to the channel’s mission of providing financial entertainment, the story says. Past prime-time schedules have included a talk show hosted by John McEnroe and reruns of NBC programs, the report notes.

“CNBC during the day speaks to institutional investors, heavyweight players in the world of high finance, and certainly some of the numbers are kind of mind-boggling,” Jim Ackerman, the senior vice president of prime-time alternative programming, told the publication. “The numbers we play in at night are much more relatable; if the guys on the ‘Car Chasers’ turn a profit of $9,000, it is a great payday, but it is also much more relatable than Greek debt crisis, or what some hedge fund is doing on Wall Street.”
