FX has been locking in deals with key cast members for the upcoming sixth season of its drama series “Sons of Anarchy.” Zap2It reports that the latest to sign is Jimmy Smits, who plays Nero Padilla on the show.

“A day after it was (re)confirmed that Donal Logue is returning to the FX series for Season 6 comes news that Jimmy Smits has signed on as well,” the story reports. “He’ll appear in all 13 episodes of the coming season as Nero, a gang member-turned-brothel owner and businessman who became entwined with SAMCRO, especially Gemma (Katey Sagal) and Jax (Charlie Hunnam), last season.”

Show creator Kurt Sutter said after the finale to season five: "Jimmy adds such a gravitas to the show. I love bringing that new culture into the show, his sort of Latino past and that energy. … I would love to bring Jimmy back. We left it sort of open-ended because I wasn’t sure of his availability. I feel like there’s enough emotional weight on the table … for us to continue that story line, yet I was careful not to pin any major story arc to his character just in case that couldn’t happen."

Plans for season six are far from firmed up, but it is expected to begin production in summer for a fall premiere.
