CBS Chief Executive Leslie Moonves, speaking at an investors’ conference, had some bad news for fans of Showtime’s serial-killer drama "Dexter": The show’s upcoming eighth season will apparently be its last, according to Deadline.com.

Moonves referred to the eighth season as the show’s "last season," with his comment following speculation that the show has been headed for its end, the story notes. He made the comment when asked about Showtime’s plans after "Dexter," and spoke about new shows such as "Masters of Sex," the story of Masters and Johnson.

Showtime President David Nevins hinted at plans to wind down the show during the Television Critics Association press tour in January, according to the piece.

"Dexter" will return for its eighth season June 30, 2013.
