Syfy said it’s developing two miniseries based on classic books: Larry Niven’s "Ringworld" series and Arthur C. Clarke’s "Childhood’s End," reports EW.com’s Inside TV.

"Ringworld" was previously under consideration nine years ago at the network, but has a different team for what will be a four-hour miniseries, the story says. Michael Perry of "The River" is adapting the series, which is about a team of explorers who discover an alien artifact.

"Childhood’s End" will be executive produced by Michael DeLuca of "The Social Network" and is about a peaceful invasion of Earth by the Overlords, a mysterious race that ends all war.

Separately, Syfy also renewed "Being Human" for a fourth season, EW.com’s Inside TV notes. The third season of the supernatural drama left viewers on a cliffhanger. The series is based on a British series with the same name.

  1. I read both of these books a long time ago. Ringworld is a favorite and one I’ve hoped would make it to the big screen. No chance of that now.
A SyFy production is cheap to the nth degree. Just how did SyFy get the rights to these novels? After seeing what they did to Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Princess of Mars, why would any writer have anything to do with them?
Niven’s universe is incredible and his aliens are real characters. Ringworld deserves Lord of the Rings level effects… we’ll probably Sharktopus-level CGI Kzin and Puppeteers.

  2. Sci Fi did a pretty good job with _Children of Dune_ and Battlestar Galactica. Miniseries is the right length…I’d rather have cheesy special effects then someone try to squish the novel into a two hour movie,
