"The Boy Scouts of America voted Thursday to end its controversial policy banning gay kids and teens from joining one of the nation’s most popular youth organizations, ditching membership guidelines that had roiled the group in recent years,"reports NBC News.

According to the story. "Over 61 percent of Scouting’s National Council of 1,400 delegates from across the country voted to lift the ban, BSA officials said. The final tally was 757 yes votes, to 475 no. The ban on gay leaders was not voted on and will remain in place."

The article adds, "The policy change will go into effect Jan. 1, 2014, ‘allowing the Boy Scouts of America the transition time needed to communicate and implement this policy to its approximately 116,000 Scouting units,’ the BSA said in a statement."

The story also makes the observation that "[T]he outcome of the historic ballot is not going to end the debate: Some opponents on the right said they would pull their sponsorships of packs and troops, and parents threatened to take their boys out of Scouting; LGBT activists said the policy change doesn’t go far enough because gay adults still wouldn’t be allowed to participate."

  1. This will never be resolved until there’s a merit badge for [fill in the blank].

  2. Why am I seeing this story here?

  3. Would any parents send their teenage sons out on camping trips with adult Gay males?

  4. Larry….. 1960 just called and wants you to come home. What an ignorant statement. Gay males are NOT predators against boys. Statistics have proven over time that pedophiles who take advantage of both boys and girls are NOT gay but sick and perverted like Jerry Sandusky. Those men and women need help but under current scouting policies are freely let in so they can do their damage just like the priests. Being gay and lesbian isn’t about sex but identity. Please educate yourself and seek out gay and lesbian friends and colleagues who can set you “straight.”

  5. Larry…2013 is calling right now and thinks you should be allowed to ask a legitimate question without being called names.

  6. That was a pretty ignorant statement.
Like asking who would let their daughters go on a camping trip with a straight male…assuming they are all pedophiles as well.
Of course the real reason they changed the policy was money, as they were losing a ton of sponsorships. Had major corporations/donors not stepped up for equal rights the BSA would never have bothered with it.
