One of the coaches on NBC’s “The Voice” has been busy doing damage control after a comment made on the show provoked harsh criticism.

CBS News reports that Adam Levine, well known as the lead singer of Maroon 5, got a negative reaction online after saying on the singing competition, “I hate this country.” (The video is below.)

Levine muttered the barely audible comment after losing two of his team members — Judith Hill and Sarah Simmons — during eliminations on Tuesday’s show.

The online response came quickly, with many commenters attacking Levine while others defended the remark as a joke. Levine responded with a series of tweets indicating the remark was indeed a joke and had been misinterpreted.

He issued a more carefully worded statement today in which he said: "I obviously love my country very much and my comments last night were made purely out of frustration."

His statement added: "Being a part of ‘The Voice,’ I am passionately invested in my team and want to see my artists succeed. Last night’s elimination of Judith and Sarah was confusing and downright emotional for me and my comments were made based on my personal dissatisfaction with the results. I am very connected to my artists and know they have long careers ahead, regardless of their outcome on the show."

Here’s the video from the show, with Levine’s comment heard around the 1:15 mark:

  1. I think he was more frustrated by the fact Blake kept all three of his CW stars and he lost two very great singers. All you have to do is look at the elation Shakira emoted when her singer was kept another week. These coaches anguish every week and take it to heart to lose any of them.
I think every one of the top 8 and even more, are ready for future stardom. If anyone of them sang the right song(s), I would definitely buy it/them.
