A two-time Academy Award nominee has been cast in a project based on the vampire trilogy by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan, reports EW.com’s Inside TV. Actor John Hurt rejoins del Toro, signing on for the pilot for "The Strain."

Hurt, 73, is known for movies such as "The Elephant Man" and television shows including "Merlin," and previously worked with del Toro on his 2004 movie "Hellboy." In “The Strain” he will play professor Abraham Setrakian, a Holocaust survivor.

Production on "The Strain" starts in September. Del Toro will co-write and direct the pilot.

“I am incredibly happy to be reunited with John, who is one of the greatest actors in the world and one of my favorite people ever,” del Toro said in a statement. “Chuck and I always visualized him while writing ‘The Strain’ novels and he is absolutely perfect for the part!”

Hurt received Oscar nominations for “Midnight Express” in 1979 and “The Elephant Man” in 1981, and won a Golden Globe for “Midnight Express.”
