ESPN will launch its new 24-hour college sports network, ESPNU, on March 4, the company announced Wednesday. The date coincides with the start of “Championship Week,” ESPN’s annual coverage of college basketball conference tournaments.

“March is a memorable time for college sports fans,” said Burke Magnus, ESPNU VP and general manager. “Given that, the start of Championship Week and the added bonus of the easy-to-remember ’03-04-05′ date, the launch timing is ideal.”

ESPN plans to program the new channel with about 300 live events in the network’s first year, including Division I football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, lacrosse, hockey and wrestling. The channel will also have studio programming and reruns of ABC Sports and ESPN games.
