‘Ellen DeGeneres’ Scales New High

With the majority of syndicated shows either flat or slightly down for the week ended Dec. 19, Telepictures’ “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” hit an all-time ratings high.

“Ellen” scored a 2.4 household rating, up 9 percent from the previous week, according to Nielsen Media Research. Compared with its year-ago performance, “Ellen” was up 50 percent for the week, the best improvement of any strip.

Despite its growth, “Ellen” ranked sixth among all the talk strips, with King World’s “The Oprah Winfrey Show” leading the pack with a 6.6. That was down 8 percent from the previous week, making for a new season low. King World’s “Dr. Phil” scored a 5.1, down 2 percent week to week, followed by Buena Vista’s “Live With Regis and Kelly” with a 3.6 (up 6 percent), NBC Universal’s “Maury” with a 3.0 (up 7 percent) and Paramount’s “The Montel Williams Show” with a 2.5 (up 9 percent).

Court shows were mostly unchanged, with Paramount’s genre leader “Judge Judy” flat with a 5.2 and “Judge Joe Brown” at 3.6.

Among magazine shows, the majority of prime access players were down, with the exception of Paramount’s top-rated “Entertainment Tonight,” which grew 2 percent for the week to a 5.2. King World’s “Inside Edition” was down 3 percent to a 3.4, while rookie “ET” spinoff “The Insider” was down 4 percent to a 2.6. NBC Universal’s “Access Hollywood” was down 7 percent to a 2.5 and Telepictures’ “Extra” dropped 4 percent to a 2.2.

The two top-rated strips for all of syndication were down from the previous week as well. King World’s “Wheel of Fortune” dropped 5 percent to an 8.9 and sister program “Jeopardy!” dropped 6 percent to a 7.6. King World’s “Everybody Loves Raymond” was the top comedy of the week and ranked third overall among strips with a 7.1, down 1 percent from last week.

NBC Universal’s “The Jane Pauley Show” was the second-highest-rated rookie of the week, dropping 7 percent to a 1.4, followed by Buena Vista’s “The Tony Danza Show,” which was flat with a 1.3, and Twentieth’s “Ambush Makeover,” down 10 percent to a 0.9. Telepictures’ “The Larry Elder Show” (0.9) and Sony’s “Pat Croce: Moving In” (0.7) and “Life & Style” (0.5) all were flat for the week.

Among rookie off-nets, the weekly run of King World’s “CSI” was down 13 percent to a 5.3, while comedy strip “Malcolm in the Middle” was unchanged with a 3.5. NBC Universal’s “Fear Factor” dropped 5 percent to a 1.9, while Twentieth’s “Yes, Dear” (1.9) and Paramount’s “Girlfriends” (1.7) both were flat.
