Joe Berwanger has resigned as VP and general manager of WDIV-TV, Post-Newsweek’s NBC affiliate in Detroit. Post-Newsweek Stations President Alan Frank announced Tuesday that he has “reluctantly” accepted Mr. Berwanger’s resignation and named Post-Newsweek veteran Steve Wasserman to succeed Mr. Berwanger as WDIV’s top executive.

Mr. Wasserman has been VP and general manager of the group’s NBC-affiliated KPRC-TV in Houston. Prior to that, he was VP and general manager of the group’s WJXT-TV in Jacksonville, Fla. For Mr. Wasserman, the move brings him back to the station where he was executive producer of news in the ’80s.

“Joe has been talking to me for some time about moving to a new phase of his life, or ‘partial retirement’ as he calls it. Reluctantly, I have finally accepted his resignation effective Sept. 1,” Mr. Frank said. “Joe has provided strong leadership and a sense of professionalism to WDIV, and we all owe him a debt of gratitude for these past five years of achievement.”

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my five years at WDIV, where I’ve had the pleasure of working with the best broadcasters in the business, along with business and community leaders here in Detroit,” Mr. Berwanger said. “It’s been a remarkable association for me, and we’ve accomplished much of which to be proud. I am also looking forward to the next chapter in my career … and life … with a high level of excitement and anticipation.”
