Talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, a native of New Orleans, is launching a fund-raising effort on her Warner Bros. syndicated daytime talk strip “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” encouraging viewers to make donations to the American Red Cross to aid those affected by Hurricane Katrina.

Ms. DeGeneres will announce “The Ellen DeGeneres Show Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund” on her Sept. 5 telecast. Warner Bros. Entertainment will donate $500,000 to kick off the fund-raising effort and will match “Ellen” viewers’ contributions up to another $500,000.

Additionally, Ms. DeGeneres will devote the first act of her Sept. 5 show to discussion about the hurricane and its effect on the south. She will also interview Roger Dickson, CEO of the American Red Cross of Greater Los Angeles, about the disaster.

Separately, The WB Television Network announced it will donate $100,000 to its New Orleans affiliate, WNOL-TV, to help its employees affected by the disaster.
