Car-enthusiast magazine Motor Trend is teaming with Multicast Networks Group to launch a car-themed broadcast television network that local TV stations could carry on a portion of their digital broadcast signal.

To be called Motor Trend TV, the new channel is expected to launch in the first quarter of 2007 and will follow the magazine’s lead by focusing on subjects related to cars, including industry trends, road tests and other topics included in the magazine, which is owned by Primedia Enterprises. Plans call for the network to broadcast 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with 80 percent original programming.

Primedia and Multicast Networks Group said the network will be exclusively for multicast, using local broadcast digital spectrum, and is being pitched to TV station owners as a way to use a portion of their digital broadcast spectrum.

So far, no station groups have signed up, though a spokesman said numerous discussions are being held.
