Robert McDowell was sworn in as a commissioner at the Federal Communications Commission by FCC Chairman Kevin Martin Thursday afternoon, clearing the way for the Republican to begin his official agency duties.

“I am honored and humbled to be joining such a distinguished group of commissioners as well as the fine career public servants at the FCC,” Mr. McDowell said in a statement.

Mr. McDowell’s term as a commissioner is good through June 30, 2009. His appointment gives Mr. Martin his first 3-2 GOP majority at the FCC.
