Champion Joins ABC’s ‘GMA’ as Weather Editor

Sam Champion, weatherman at the ABC-owned and -operated station WABC-TV in New York, has been named weather anchor of ABC News’ “Good Morning America.” Mr. Champion will begin at “GMA” on Tuesday, Sept. 5. In addition to his duties at “GMA,” Champion has also been named weather editor of ABC News.

As weather anchor, Champion will be based at “Good Morning America’s” Times Square Studios in New York. He will report the latest national weather throughout the program and will travel to cover weather-related stories around the country and globe. In addition, he will also contribute feature reports on the environment and weather-related issues.

“Having filled in on ‘GMA’ for many years, I have always felt like part of the family,” Mr. Champion said in a statement.

Mr. Champion has been with WABC-TV in since 1988. he previously served as weekend weather anchor and news reporter at WJKS-TV in Jacksonville, Fla., and as a news and weather anchor/reporter at WPSD-TV in Paducah, Ky.

The announcement comes a day after Chris Cuomo was named “GMA’s” new news anchor and just 10 days before Tom Cibrowski takes over as executive producer of the morning program on Sept. 1.
