Bears-Giant Game to Air on NBC

NBC will show the Chicago Bears taking on the New York Giants on “Sunday Night Football” on Nov. 12, the first week in which the NFL’s new flexible scheduling plan goes into effect.

Flexible scheduling was created by the NFL to try to prevent meaningless match-ups from being broadcast in prime time.

As it turned out, the Bears-Giant game had been earmarked for NBC when the broadcast schedule was first put out, which means CBS and Fox never had a chance to broadcast what is likely to be a very strong-performing contest.

In future weeks, the NFL may want NBC to show a game in prime time that is currently scheduled to appear on Fox or CBS. Both of those networks have the ability to protect games in five of the last seven weeks of the season.

“We are thrilled to finally start something that viewers and networks have both desired for years with a game of this magnitude between two of the NFL’s most storied franchises and the two largest television markets in the NFL” said NBC Universal Sports and Olympics Chairman Dick Ebersol. “Both of these teams are off to tremendous starts and are potential Super Bowl contenders. This has the makings of one of the can’t-miss games of the season.”
