Catchphrases Run Wild

Nov 29, 2006  •  Post A Comment

Walter Cronkite signed off from his CBS evening newscasts by saying “And that’s the way it is.” Many episodes of “The Honeymooners” ended with Jackie Gleason’s Ralph Kramden embracing his wife, Alice, saying “Baby, you’re the greatest.” And many debates on “Weekend Update” on “Saturday Night Live” were concluded after Dan Aykroyd declared, “Jane, you ignorant slut,” to co-anchor Jane Curtain.
TV is known for generating catchphrases and memorable quotes. TV Land has gathered them up for a week-long series of specials beginning Dec. 11.
“We are sure that ‘The 100 Greatest TV Quotes and Catchphrases’ will strike a chord with the TV generation and will illustrate the influence the media has had on pop culture,” said Larry W. Jones, president of TV Land.
Some of the quotes to be featured came during newsworthy events, from John F. Kennedy’s stirring “Ask not what your country can do for you …” speech, to “Senator, you’re no Jack Kennedy” from Lloyd Bentsen’s debate with Dan Quayle.
Game shows are remembered for “The tribe has spoken” on “Survivor” and “Is that your final answer” from “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.” In comedy, even a single word can be a memorable catchphrase, whether it’s “Norm!” from cheers or “Stifle” from “All in the Family” or “D’oh” from “The Simpsons.”
Still others come from commercials, such as Wendy’s “Where’s the beef,” Miller Lite’s “Tastes Great, Less Filling,” “Whassup” from Budweiser and “Pardon Me, would you have any Grey Poupon?”
The special is produced by Gay Rosenthal Productions, which also makes “Behind the Music.” Executive producers are Gay Rosenthal and Paul Barrosse, plus Sal Maniaci, senior VP at TV Land.
Good night, John Boy.
