While HD cable networks are struggling for stateside distribution, some have taken to exporting their programming overseas. Here’s a roundup of domestic networks and shows currently being offered internationally.
* ESPN: The sports network announced in September it would syndicate sports in hi-def around the world. ESPN will make available more than 2,000 hours of content, including NFL and NCAA games. The service will formally launch at the Sportel trade show next month in Monaco.
* Discovery HD Theater: The network is carried in South Korea, Japan, Canada, Germany, Austria, the United Kingdom, Ireland and Poland.
* Scripps Networks: The company has licensed HGTV, Fine Living and Food Network shows in Japan and has said interest is growing in Singapore, Indonesia and South Korea.
* Voom Networks: Canadian-based specialty broadcaster High Fidelity HDTV has added Voom’s Treasure HD, Rush HD and Equator HD in the past year. Voom launched on SkyHD in South Korea with a two-hour daily prime-time block from its various networks. Voom has also entered into co-production agreements for HD programming in Singapore and in the United Kingdom. In addition, Voom has licensed two series to China’s CCTV and expects to launch its first 24-hour channel Nov. 1 on Canal Digital in Sweden.
