GSN, once known as the Game Show Network, plans to take a closer look at one of the classics of the genre, “Match Game.”
A special titled “The Real Match Game Story: Behind the Blank,” is scheduled to run Nov. 26 at 8 p.m. (ET).
The special, hosted by Jamie Farr, features one of the last interviews given by “Match Game” host Gene Rayburn. Also interviewed are people who appeared on the show as panelists, including Richard Dawson, Brett Somers, Marcia Wallace, Betty White and Jimmy Walker.
According to GSN, “Match Game” was a run-of-the-mill game show with relatively simple questions, such as “Every morning, John puts _____ on his cereal.” Contestants tried to match answers given by a panel of celebrities. The show faced cancellation, so the producers and staff decided to have some fun on the way out by loading the questions with sexual innuendo and double-entendres, which the panelists would pretend not to understand. The show’s fortunes changed and “Match Game” became the highest-rated game show in daytime from 1974 to 1976.
The day before the special, GSN will run a marathon of classic “Match Game” episodes from 8 p.m. till 11 p.m.
“The Real Match Game Story: Behind the Blank” is produced by Asylum Entertainment. Frank Sinton is the executive producer.
