(Corrects Russ Mitchell’s New Duties)

A Cinderella-style search for Tracy Smith’s next co-anchor on “The Saturday Early Show” will begin Jan. 13, when CBS News White House correspondent Jim Axelrod sits in for the first of three times.

Founding co-anchor Russ Mitchell will sign off this weekend after more than nine years on the “Saturday” shift to concentrate on other CBS News duties, including being the news anchor on the “The Early Show” on weekdays and permanent anchoring of the Sunday edition of “Evening News.”

Mr. Axelrod’s “Saturday” assignment will be in addition to covering the White House.

“With the president’s speech on Iraq and the State of the Union coming up, it’s the perfect time for Jim to sit in,” said Steve Friedman, morning broadcasts VP for CBS News, in the announcement Wednesday of the temporary duty. “I’m anxious to see Jim in the anchor role with Tracy.”

Other substitutes will be announced later.
