NBC Universal rising star Mike Steib will leave the company Jan. 12 to join Google to work on the company’s video advertising business. Mr. Steib most recently served as general manager for strategic ventures for NBC TV stations. He has been with NBC since 2001 and built up the company’s Weather Plus digital network before he moved on to develop the National Broadband Company, NBC’s new online video syndication marketplace, last fall. Brian Buchwald remains at NBC as the general manager for the NBBC.

In a statement, Google said Mr. Steib will help “work with advertisers to create effective, measurable video advertising. As we continue to grow our video ads business, Michael’s experience in Internet and media will help us succeed.”

Mr. Steib will head up an ad sales team that reports to Tim Armstrong, VP of ad sales. Mr. Steib will be based in New York.
